Under direct supervision, operates various construction equipment and vehicles to construct, repair and maintain the Town’s curbs, gutters, inlets, outfalls, debris-separators, storm-water, manholes, ditches, drainage systems, and other related public infrastructure. High School Diploma/GED

Four (4) years equipment operations experience or a heavy equipment operator license

Three (3) years’ experience in a municipal setting preferred



  1. Must be bondable.

    2.             Texas Driver’s License – must have a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (“CDL”) or obtain a Class “A” Texas Commercial Driver’s License within 6-months of date of hire.



  1. Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently.
  2. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies or authorities, or members of the local business community.

  6. Candidate must have the ability to communicate effectively with city staff, supervisors, residents, and vendors. 

    8.             Must have the ability to perform tasks under pressure, with short deadlines and the ability to work overtime and flexible hours as necessary.

    9.             Must have the ability to participate in the development and administration of division goals, objectives and procedures.

    10.           Experience in prioritizing, planning, and scheduling, works independently in the absence of specific instructions or supervision.

    11.           Use tact and diplomacy with public, and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers.

    12.           Must possess strong organization skills and be entrepreneurial, energetic, and imaginative. 

    13.           Good verbal and written communications skills are essential. 

    14.           Skilled in the use of a variety of machines, including, but not limited to, power tools, heavy excavation equipment, radio, personal computers, telephone, calculators, facsimile machine and copiers.

The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to operate various machines, drive vehicles and/or equipment; and reach with hands and arms.  The employee frequently is required to talk and hear.  The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to (80) eighty pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.



Construction equipment operators work in nearly every type of climate and weather condition. Workers often get dirty, greasy, muddy, or dusty.  



  1. Check to make sure that equipment functions properly
  2. Cleans and maintains equipment
  3. Report malfunctions to fleet and supervisors
  4. Move levers, push pedals, or turn valves to activate power equipment
  5. Drive and maneuver equipment, coordinate machine actions with crew members in response to hand or audio signals, ensure that safety standards are met when operating equipment
  6. Cleans, repairs, and maintains curbs, gutters, inlets, outfalls, debris-separators, storm-water, manholes, ditches, drainage systems, and other related public infrastructure.
  7. Operates, repairs, and maintains various light to heavy equipment, vehicles, and tools such as tractors, mowers, front end and back end loaders, track-hoes, street sweepers, bucket trucks, augers maintainers, blades, jackhammers, rollers, dump trucks, motor graders, skill saws, drills, bolt cutters, and other 1 ton to 5 ton vehicles, etc.
  8. Operates various equipment to clean storm-water structures; lay pipelines and sets manholes; remove brush and mow high grass and weeds; picks up litter and debris; cleans in and around storm-water structures.
  9. Works safely when working in close proximity to high-speed vehicle traffic areas; along medians, right of ways.
  10. Loads and unloads supplies, equipment, and tools, etc., on and off of vehicles and equipment.
  11. Works with crew-leader and supervisor to eliminate potential hazards, liability exposures, problem areas, inquiries of the general public, and the status of work activities.
  12. Conducts daily inspections and preventative maintenance measures of vehicles, equipment, and tools such as checking fluid levels, cleaning, checking safe and proper operation, and servicing.
  13. Adheres to departmental, personnel and safety rules and regulations.
  14. Helps set up proper work zones using cones and barricades to ensure public safety at all times.
  15. Acts as lead in directing work crews in the absence of a crew leader.
